Four Foods For Friday 98

I couldn’t get to the FFFF until today! Whew, it’s been a crazy week. The husband has been home for dinner this week, which means more cooking for me.
Here’s this week’s questions.
1. How many cookbooks do you have? (1-10, 11-20, 20+)
2. Where do you keep your large utensils (such as slotted sppons, spatulas, etc)?
3. What is your countertop made of?
4. Do you use canisters in your kitchen?
1. Gee, I must have 30 of them. But I don’t use them. 20 of them are the very old “Better Homes & Gardens” from the 60s. The recipes have really changed since then. The photos in these books are of fatty meats and heavy starchy vegetables with cream sauces. I just don’t eat that way, ick. I try to use my Joy of Cooking book, but that has a lot of fancy stuff (capers, caviar, eye of pheasant or whatever) that are too extravagant for me. I usually use the Internet now, and just customize everything.
2. In a VERY unsteady wire stand beside the stove. You have to insert and remove the utensils very carefully, or else the three-legged stand will topple over and cause everything to crash into the floor. :-p
3. THIS evil stuff!!! *screams of horror*
That’s 1970 orange laminate, badly warped and damaged. I lament about the condition of my kitchen (as well as other home-related stuff, like electrical and HAVC filters and stuff) at New York Renovator. You can get a full version of the horrible condition my poor old house is in there. I’m trying to renovate the place, but New York State taxes and unemployment keep interrupting the process!!!
4. Only for sugar. I use large rubbermaid or utility buckets for bulk flour and cornmeal. Nothing fancy.
Do You Cook When the Man Isn’t Home For Dinner?

I haven’t done much cooking since Thanksgiving. I’d like to say I was “burned out” from the Thanksgiving cooking… but really, I hardly did any Thanksgiving cooking at all (just the pies and the turkey). I guess I’ve just been lazy.
And busy.
Actually, the kids have had colds and don’t feel like eating fancy meals… and the husband has been working evenings lately. I find that I rarely cook dinner when he’s not here to eat it. Do you do that? I’m happy just to munch on edamame and mozzarella cheese, and the kids “scrounge” through the leftovers. I can’t say I just LOVE to cook (although I do love to eat!). I’d just as soon cuddle up with a good book (or watch a good movie from a rackmount lcd screen) and snack on cheese and veggies. Yum.
How do you do things? Do you cook if there isn’t anyone to cook for?
