Aprons and Things.. Outdated or Not?

My daughter likes to wear aprons. I was never much of an apron wearer, although I probably should wear them. I always make such a disaster in the kitchen (as I do with everything). I know some bloggers who actually MAKE aprons– the prettiest little things– and sell them online.
Is there really a market for aprons? I had no idea that anyone really wore them anymore.
In the 40s, 50s and 60s, you’d always see women on some TV show or in some magazine ad, wearing such pretty women’s dresses, and frilly aprons over them. I don’t know when this all changed– women’s “lib” perhaps?– but you never see women wearing aprons anymore.

I got one for a wedding present, some 20 years ago, and never really wore it. My daughter discovered it, and she wears it. She seems to like them. I guess they are OK. I should wear one, I’m such a messy cook. But I never think of it.
What do you think? Do you wear an apron when you cook?
The Egg Recall Scam

When the news media was screaming about the latest “food recall” regarding eggs, I had my suspicions about it. For one, there was really no danger– salmonella is killed when cooked. Unless you are gulping down your slimy eggs raw, you really had nothing to worry about.
But people were throwing away their eggs in fear of contamination. And why? Well, because the news media said so!
*rolls eyes*
Sorry– I’m VERY skeptical about these things. And now I see that my suspicions were right. Because the feds *suddenly* came up with a bill to control the egg supply in the country! And not only that, but to control more and more of the food supply in the country!
What the heck is going on??? Why is the federal government jumping in SO readily, ready to take over EVERYTHING these days?! They can’t even leave our EGGS alone!!
Check out this good article by Ethan A. Huff, and this website called Natural News has a great feed (haha, get it!?) on recalls and all the news you DON’T hear about them.
Sometimes Food is Too Pretty To Eat

Look at this screenshot. Doesn’t this make your mouth WATER?!

It’s from Foodbuzz. That luscious dessert is Tiramisu, a luscious Italian dessert. The recipe is here, although it’s in Italian so i can’t make heads nor tails of it. Whatever it says, the dessert looks fabulous.
I get emails from Foodbuzz just about every day, but I never have time to read them.
I am too busy to cook, really, with the renovation and my job and a million other things pulling at me. I think I will try to get back into cooking someday…. we’ll see. I actually started this blog because I thought I could make some money from Foodbuzz and other ventures. But food blogging is REALLY time consuming. Besides the marketing of your blog, trying to submit stuff via directory submission service and get on the search engine pages, there’s the actual COOKING. And you have to take PHOTOS, too. GOOD ONES. And edit them, and upload them, and.. by that time, I’m either starved or exhausted, and don’t want to blog anymore– or, another project has my attention.
Anyway, Foodbuzz is a nifty place to surf for new recipes. But like I said, some of the recipes are SO fancy and so pretty that they look too good to eat!
Spice-y

I created a spice drawer fir the new kitchen.
Like it?
I love it!
I sometimes get a nagging thought about it, as if the space could be better used for something else besides holding plastic bottles that could stand on their own. But I REALLY like the spices in the drawer, it’s so convenient. And it’s SO luxurious, having just enough space to be able to tuck spices in a DRAWER of all things! If it was msm lotion, that’d be another matter… these are spices I use regularly while cooking.
I do like it, wasteful of space or no.
Where do you keep your spices?
My New Kitchen Island

Sorry the photos didn’t turn out so great. I haven’t had any time to read through the manual for the camera, can you believe it? I even got a DVD tutorial for it, and haven’t had a moment to watch it. It’s been SO BUSY. I’ve never been so busy in my entire life, not even when I had 3 kids under the age of 3. Egads.
Anyway, here’s another shot of the island. Boy, I love this thing.
The island itself is not the greatest of quality. Made in China. Sub-par materials, way way WAY below-par instructions. But it’s an island, and it’s MINE. The butcher block is treated with Waterlox, and should last us a long, long time. Over it, the girls and I can sip our coffee, chop veggies, giggle over the Top ten weight loss pills, talk about our latest projects, oh yeah– and cook, too.
I really love how everything is finally coming into place. I have dreamed about a new kitchen for over 13 years.. and before then, when we lived in apartments, how I wanted a REAL kitchen. Hurray!
